Frost Shaman Massive AoE and Crowd Control Build Guide

Overview

?

The Frost Shaman uses PrefixCold Damage along with Chill, Frostbite and PrefixFreeze Rate per stack of Chill to deal large AoE damage while crowd controlling enemies. The Primalist Mastery of Shaman is largely unexplored and considered weak by many when not used as a hybrid. However, this build will change your mind as it allows the Shaman to easily stand alone as a powerful champion of its own.

The build utilizes multiple skills that create auras around the character such as Maelstrom and Avalanche. This allows the character to cast and activate said spells before weaving through enemies avoiding incoming damage. It may seem like a passive build but it isn't. Due to the short cooldowns of all abilities and the ability to have multiple stacks of Maelstrom you'll be hitting buttons as frequently as most other builds.

Satisfying the companion or minion component with Summon Storm Crows and the totem fantasy with Summon Storm Totem this build has something for everyone.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Tons of crowd control and large AoE damage

Decent boss killer thanks to Frostbite damage over time

Incredibly easy to play and gear

Cons

Early levels require use of skills that aren't in final loadout

Totems and Minions are killed easily and require re-activation

Gameplay / Mechanics

All skills are either innately cold or converted to cold. This is to provide ample amounts of Chill, Frostbite and PrefixFreeze Rate per stack of Chill. This will severely increase the survivability of you and any allies you have. In combination they slow, deal damage over time and occasionally freeze enemies in place. Every skill in the loadout is capable of one or more of these debuffs.

Activate Maelstrom while gaining additional stacks from Beneath The Waves and refresh as needed. This will allow you to sustain your PrefixMana while dealing consistent AoE damage and crowd controlling enemies.

Use Crowstorm which is provided by Summon Storm Crows and simply requires and additional press of the ability button for mobility. This is one of the best traversal skills in the game as it allows you to move through walls, down elevation changes like staircases and other things that other traversal abilities can often fail to do.

Placing Summon Storm Totem on ranged enemies can be highly effective. It has a health pool of its own and will distract the nearby enemies while damaging and crowd controlling them. This is also an incredibly strong ability while leveling. Lastly, although transformed to cold it still provides lightning damage as well and is useful for cold resistant enemies.

Avalanche hits incredibly hard and through the specialization tree you can have 100% uptime and make the storm follow you. This allows you to freely move and avoid damage while dealing large amounts of damage at the same time. It also provides crowd control similar to all the other abilities and once unlocked the character basically snowballs to new heights.

Warcry may seem out of place but it in fact has lots of synergy once converted to cold. With the ability to freeze enemies and boost the cold damage output of you and allies by an amazing 250% for 4 seconds it's your burst cooldown. Use this on bosses and high health mobs as your mana allows. You can also use it defensively to freeze all nearby enemies in tough situations.

Equipment

These are just sample pieces of equipment with affixes you can look out for while leveling. There are no rigid item requirements for this build. With a large number of beneficial affixes to choose from you can opt for balance, stacking or even neglect on particular stats. The setup shown neglects PrefixMinion Damage and PrefixMinion Health to a arge degree. However, by favoring stats like PrefixAttunement skills like Summon Storm Crows and Summon Storm Totem still gain improvement.

Idols

You will likely need to stack resist through idols. Keep an eye out for any idols with +resist regardless of size.

Build Variants

Leveling

Leveling is smooth and easy thanks to all the cold effects this build provides. Be mindful some skills unlock after you have additional specialization slots. It can be beneficial to use other skills in the meantime. Fury Leap, Upheaval and Swipe are great choices before final skills are available.

Endgame

This build continues to scale nicely upon reaching endgame (~lvl. 55). With limited options for pure Shamans this is a great choice for all content.

Loot Filter

No loot filter is provided for this guide. You can generate a loot filter for this build in the Build Planner or create one using Filter Wizard in the Loot Filters section.
