Overview

?

I see a lot of "beginner" builds running around, and almost without fail, they have several uniques or set pieces that make the build work in one way or another.

That doesn't seem much like a "beginner" build to me. That's a build for an alt, when you already have someone funneling gear to them. And while there's nothing wrong with a build for alts, I noticed a pretty gaping hole in legitimately beginner builds. Something you can use as a brand new player, or at the start of a new league, without having to farm up gear and money and shards on another character. You can use THIS character to farm up all of that for other characters instead!

This build requires no uniques or set items, it doesn't take money to start up, and it will take you from level 2 all the way into empowered monoliths without too much difficulty. There's also a fair bit of customization in this build. At first glance, it may look like this build is incomplete, and I suppose from a certain POV it probably is... but this isn't meant to take you to infinity and beyond. I don't know what the ceiling for this build is, because that's not the point of my guide.

Between your Summoned Skeleton, Bone Golem, and Skeleton Mage, you can easily get over a dozen permanent minions rampaging around you by early level 50s. Fill in your time between large summons with either Volatile Zombie or Wraith (or both!), and watch your friends swarm over your enemies, while you stay safe behind a wall of undead flesh.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Great for beginners

No uniques, set pieces, or legendaries required

This build can carry you all the way to empowered monoliths with ease

This build is easily customizable. The perks I've entered are the ones I have used, but you can easily shift some points around to move different directions.

Minions doing all the work leaves time for you to dodge boss mechanics.

Cons

100% of your damage comes from minions - leaving you with little to do at some points.

Acolyte's only traversal skill costs health.

This build can occasionally struggle against big bosses.

Resummoning permanent minions can get mana-heavy.

First 10 or so levels can be real slow, and squishy.

Gameplay / Mechanics

The gameplay is very simple for this build:

I created this build to be customizable. The skill trees are intentionally left incomplete to give you room to plug your own options in. The passive tree stops at level 80, because this is not an end game build guide. This is meant to take you from the beginning of the game, well into monoliths. That isn't to say that this build couldn't go far, i'm honestly not sure what the upper limit of this build as I created it would be. My point is that this build is a strong option for league starters, and SSF players.

Equipment

Since I specifically designed this build to not require specific gear, the prefixes and suffixes i'm adding below are just items to shoot for. Don't worry about trying to get perfect rolls with everything, just keep looking for ways to upgrade your gear as you go.

Blessings

I listed the versions of the blessing from the empowered monoliths below, but the same applies to normal monoliths, they're just not "Grand x of the y". A lot of this is going to be personally dependent on what you need based on how you've leveled up. None of these really have any *bad* choices, I just picked the ones that may be more common to need over others. Your mileage may vary, and again this is just another part of this build that can be infinitely customized. Heck, I could play 3 characters like this and find that I need different stuff from the monolith blessings, so take these suggestions as just that--a suggestion.

Build Variants

Leveling

One thing you may notice while looking through this guide, is that it looks incomplete. That's not the case at all, however. I intended this to be a beginner build. A guide to get you started in the league and start punching into monoliths to farm gear with. That's not to say that you CAN'T take this into 500+ corruption empowered monoliths, just that that wasn't my goat with this build. Now that i've set the proper expectation:

Skills

The best thing about this build is that it starts right away. Pick up your minion skills as they become available, and start looking for the routes to increase the numbers of minions.

Pick up Summon Skeleton at level 2. Shoot for the nodes that give you more skeletons: Marrow Walkers, Hollow Walkers, and Grave Walkers give you a total of 6 skeletons rather quickly. From here, you can pick up some minion sustain via Marrow Tap, and then more damaging skills. I decided to make all of the minions archers via Mightier than the Sword, but that's not a requirement by any means.

At level 9, you can pick up Summon Bone Golem. To me Tower of Bones was my immediate route for threat generation. From there, you can get some self-healing through Hunger, and then double the big boys up with Twinned Golems.

Your 3rd skill opens up at level 20, and you have a choice between Summon Wraith and Summon Volatile Zombie. I started with wraith, and then changed to zombies when my last skill opened up at 50.

If you chose the Wraith first, your immediate priorities are to increase his lifespan via Grave Reality and Delay the End. From here, you can shoot for skills to make them hit harder. I picked Reapers, Necrotic Hunger, and Dark Scythe for extra damage, then head to Locus Of Resurrection as a bit of utility.

If you choose the zombies, shoot for Repulsive Vomit and Wretched Innards first off for a big damage increase. Then shoot for Pull of the Grave for the 16% execute. Then go to Ravenous to turn the zombie damage to physical/necrotic.

At level 35, you can pick up Summon Skeletal Mage. At this point, I found the Leech Life helpful early, and then Undead Mortars and Battle Hardened for big damage. From here, you can pick up an extra mage at Order of Death, then go for flat damage.

At level 50, you can pick the skill you didn't choose earlier. Or you can go for better movement through Transplant, bonus damage through Bone Curse, a really big boy through Assemble Abomination, there's a ton of options, and none of them are wrong.

Gear

Gearing while leveling is pretty simple. You want to prioritize PrefixMinion Damage and PrefixMinion Health above all else, pretty much always. When you start getting mid 30s and above, you'll need to start looking into survivability for yourself. Non class-specific idols are a great way to shore up some low resistances, and SuffixHealth plus any minion affix starts becoming more and more common naturally. Start shattering gear as the money comes to you. You can make this character as simple or complex as you like.
